LOMA LINDA, Calif. – R.C. Cline shares a story of an ordinary man who fought in “No Man’s Sky” (published by AuthorHouse) in his book first published in 2015. Narrating the events that unfold through the eyes of Staff Sergeant J. Emerson Krieger and the eyes of Crew 136 of the 849th Bomb Squadron, Cline invites readers to accompany Krieger on an adventure that began in Bloomville, Ohio in June, 1943 and follows a boy of 18 and his crew through 29 missions of intense combat in hostile European Skies. Krieger and many of his mates were mere boys who had just graduated from high school.
Offering insight into the challenges of war and combat during World War II, “No Man’s Sky” shares the story Crew 136 flying miles above the ground, half frozen in the forbidding cold, saved only from the harsh elements by electrically heated flight suits and protective clothing. Oxygen kept them alive and alert. The job of the team was to fly a four engine B- 17 bomber and destroy enemy targets. They eventually did their job superbly, as they risked their own futures above European skies.
“I wanted to leave a tribute to the greatest generation,” Cline said about his inspiration for writing. “The task had little prestige. It was a common job, a lowly duty for a man fighting 'in the belly of the beast' of a heavy bomber called a B-17 Flying Fortress. Krieger trained to protect the men in his combat team. The perils that ‘Emy’ Krieger, and the crew of Delbert Hesseltine, Jimmy Cox and Art Struempler faced were brief, dangerous and intense.”
The book is a tribute to the teams of men who flew and fought in the 490th Bombardment Group, based in Eye, in East Anglia in the United Kingdom. The story shows the sacrifice of men who fought for freedom. The book demonstrates that freedom is never free, but paid for by courageous men who put their needs and desires on hold to restore the world from the horrors of war.
